The 2017 death of Iván Fandiño, a well-known Spanish matador, shocked fans worldwide. During a bullfight in Aire-sur-l’Adour, France, Fandiño tripped on his cape during the fight, leaving him exposed to the charging bull.
The bull struck him with its horn, piercing his chest and damaging critical organs. As paramedics raced to help, Fandiño was still conscious and uttered his last chilling words: “Hurry up, I’m dying.” Sadly, he died from a heart attack en route to the hospital.
The accident was sudden and left fellow bullfighters stunned. One said he could not believe how quickly Fandiño was brought down.
Fandiño had survived earlier injuries in the ring but this tragic incident marked the first matador death in France since 1921.
Tributes followed from Spain’s royalty and government, remembering him as a significant figure in bullfighting.
His death came less than a year after another bullfighter, Víctor Barrio, died in Spain. The tradition faces growing scrutiny though remains legal in certain parts of France and Spain.
