The setting was a bush block near Murgon, Queensland, an area populated by dangerous snakes like brown snakes and red-bellied black snakes. After a day of chores, Tristian and his stepbrother decided to take a ride-on mower to a nearby creek. It was there that Tristian fell and said he had been bitten. However, in the absence of obvious bite marks and with the common presence of sticks and debris, his stepbrother insisted it was not a snake. This initial dismissal set a tragic course of events in motion.
Returning to the camp, Tristian was visibly unwell. He was pale, struggling to speak clearly, and began to vomit. Instead of recognizing these as signs of envenomation, the adults present speculated that he had secretly taken alcohol from a cooler.
