The National Hurricane Center has reported that hurricane Kiko is building strength as it approaches Hawaii. Although recently downgraded to a Category 3 storm, Kiko still packs winds up to 115 mph and is expected to impact the islands by the afternoon of Tuesday, September 9.

The storm’s trajectory between southern Mexico and Hawaii has prompted warnings for heavy rain, flash floods, and landslides. AccuWeather’s experts say the storm may weaken over cooler waters but residents must remain vigilant.

Due to the rarity of hurricanes in Hawaii, local officials urge people to prepare by assembling supplies, knowing evacuation plans, and staying informed via emergency alerts like the Everbridge system.
