Lady Sarah Spencer’s Candid Interview Ends Her Romance with Prince Charles

In the late 1970s, Lady Sarah Spencer, eldest sister to Princess Diana, was romantically linked to Prince Charles. Although not as famous as Diana’s later royal romance, Sarah was a significant figure in the prince’s life and considered a potential wife.

Their relationship came under intense public scrutiny after Sarah gave an interview to two journalists in early 1978. She divulged personal struggles with anorexia and underage drinking and stated clearly she would only marry for love, even if her suitor was the heir to the throne.

Sarah’s honest but damaging remarks angered Prince Charles and changed the public’s opinion of her. The interview’s fallout ended their relationship, and Sarah married Neil McCorquodale in 1980. She later introduced Charles to Diana, who blossomed into the beloved “People’s Princess.”

Despite the heartbreak, Sarah remained close to her sister and nephews and honored Diana’s legacy throughout her life.
