Ian Watkins, infamous for his role as Lostprophets’ frontman and later convicted for serious sexual crimes against children, has died in prison after a violent assault. The 48-year-old was serving a 35-year term at HM Prison Wakefield when he was attacked earlier this month. Emergency responders were called, but Watkins was pronounced dead inside the facility, prompting a murder probe.

Starting out in Wales, Lostprophets achieved fame and success before everything unraveled following Watkins’ 2013 convictions for 13 offenses, including the attempted rape of a baby. The severity of his crimes was widely condemned as unprecedented. This led to the band’s breakup and the end of its legacy.
Just before his arrest, Watkins left a mysterious final tweet saying: “Well……that escalated pretty quickly……I do apologise….” Though its meaning is unclear, it was part of a string of tweets referencing a poorly made film airing at the time. In 2016, his Twitter briefly reactivated, sharing music links, but prison authorities asserted he had no phone access—though he was found with one in 2018.

Violence followed Watkins in prison; in 2023 he was stabbed and taken hostage by other inmates. Now, two men have been charged with his murder, set to appear in court soon. His former band members have moved on, forming a new band and cutting all connections. The prison service is limited in comment as the investigation continues.
