How to Safely Remove and Prevent Lone Star Tick Bites

While working outside, feeling a tiny tickle turned into a surprise when I found a lone star tick clinging to my ankle. These ticks are different from others because they actively seek out warm hosts and move quickly. Spotting the white dot on female ticks helps identify them. They can spread allergens and illnesses, making quick action important.

Carefully grab the tick near your skin with fine tweezers and pull straight out steadily without jerking or twisting. After removal, clean the spot and save the tick to show your doctor if needed. Remember not to squeeze the tick with your fingers. Note the date you found the tick and watch for symptoms such as redness, fever, or tiredness.

Protect your family and pets by dressing in long sleeves and pants outdoors, applying repellents containing DEET or picaridin, and checking everyone thoroughly after being outside. Maintain your yard by cutting back tall grass and removing debris to reduce tick hiding spots.

By taking these precautions and knowing how to respond, you keep your home and loved ones safer from tick-related health issues.
