How to Properly Clean Your Plastic Cutting Board and Keep It Safe

One day I noticed my plastic cutting board looked stained, and those knife scratches were filled with unknown debris. I realized I hadn’t cleaned it properly in a long time—not just a quick rinse, but a thorough cleaning.

I now scrub it with hot water, good dish soap, and a stiff brush, especially after cutting raw meats. Cold water doesn’t remove germs well at all. I aim to do this every time, though sometimes life gets busy.

I discovered that tea tree oil spray is great for freshness. Mixing a little oil with water and spraying the board after washing helps it smell nice and adds some extra cleaning power. For stubborn stains, I use a paste of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide, scrub it on with gloves, wait a bit, and rinse with hot water. This gets rid of deep stains and smells.

Another trick I use is rubbing a lemon half dipped in salt all over the board. It smells fresh and cleans well. A vinegar and water spray after washing helps remove odors like garlic or fish, although the smell takes a little while to fade.

I became serious about sanitizing after handling raw meat. I use sprays or the dishwasher if my board can handle it. When my board is too scratched and stained, I replace it rather than risk contamination.

Cleaning my cutting board properly makes cooking more enjoyable and safe, which to me is worth the effort.
