Englewood Health nurse Lexi Kuenzle says she was suspended without pay after confronting a bariatric surgeon who allegedly “cheered” the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The incident happened shortly after the news broke on September 10.
Kuenzle remembers being with colleagues and a patient when Dr. Matthew Jung said Kirk “had it coming” and “deserved it.” Shocked, Kuenzle questioned his ethics, especially as a medical professional.

Despite reporting the comments to hospital management and sharing the incident on social media, Kuenzle was suspended the next day and warned she might be terminated. She filed a lawsuit against Englewood Health and Dr. Jung, charging retaliation, discrimination, and a hostile work environment.

The hospital confirmed Kuenzle’s suspension and said Dr. Jung was also suspended while the matter is investigated but denied any firing or forced resignation. The lawsuit notes Dr. Jung’s alleged inappropriate behavior and lack of disciplinary action besides a jesting offer to buy lunch.
This case has drawn attention to workplace ethics, free expression limits, and retaliation concerns, especially in politically sensitive cases. Conservative voices have shown support for Kuenzle, questioning Dr. Jung’s ability to provide unbiased care following his comments.
Ongoing legal action will likely examine how healthcare workers’ rights, professional behavior, and political expression intersect in this controversial matter.
