Carole Silver has issued an urgent warning after her husband Mark died of prostate cancer that might have been caught earlier if screening were available. Mark, 71, first noticed blood after going to the toilet in 2010 but was told he had piles. Blood tests later revealed elevated PSA, a marker for prostate cancer.

He underwent treatments including hormone blockers and radiotherapy, but the cancer spread to bones and other areas. He passed away in 2019, just before their 48th wedding anniversary. Carole regrets the lack of a national screening programme, which could have caught the cancer sooner.

Early-stage prostate cancer rarely has symptoms, but signs like changes in urine flow, blood in urine, erectile dysfunction, weight loss, and bone pain can appear later. Detecting cancer early improves survival chances drastically, yet many men miss this window due to lack of screening.
