What a Filmmaker Learned Spending 20 Years With America’s Most Inbred Family

For nearly 20 years, Mark Laita has filmed the Whittaker family in Odd, West Virginia, famously called the most inbred family in America. His early visits were marked by suspicion, with neighbors ready to defend their privacy fiercely.

Laita found the family’s communication unusual, made up of grunts and barks. He described one wild moment when a man screamed and fled with his pants around his ankles, kicking trash cans—a scene that left a strong impression.

Though he can’t definitively confirm family ties, Laita believes the health problems stem partly from generations of close relatives marrying. He started fundraisers to help but faced mistrust when questions arose about where the money went, including a fabricated death used to get funds for addiction treatment.

Despite difficulties, Laita chose to forgive and reconnect, but he warns others to approach the family with respect and care, as locals protect them from outsiders.

The complex family history shows generations of inbreeding and its effects. Laita urges the public to respect the Whittakers’ need for privacy and dignity rather than cause more harm.
