Preventable Medical Neglect Took the Life of Young Lila Marsland

The heartbreaking story of Lila Marsland, who passed away at age five from undiagnosed meningitis, highlights systemic failures in healthcare. Lila was seen by several clinicians but was mistakenly treated for a less serious condition.

Her mother, a hospital nurse, voiced concerns about meningitis symptoms, but Lila was discharged and died shortly thereafter. The coroner’s inquest found neglect had played a role and called for urgent improvements.

Lila’s family has since turned their grief into advocacy, creating programs to help bereaved siblings and raising awareness to prevent similar tragedies.
