In a major escalation, Russia’s use of drones to penetrate Polish airspace triggered a fast and coordinated military response from Poland and its NATO allies. Over 19 drone flights were reported near the border, leading to swift interception by Polish F-16s and NATO jets, including Dutch F-35s.
Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed the strikes and called the episode a “huge provocation.” Several airports, including Warsaw’s main hubs, experienced temporary closures due to heightened security concerns as the drones crossed into Polish territory.
The drones’ intrusion is seen as a dangerous game-changer, dangerously close to NATO soil. Secretary-General Mark Rutte described the act as “reckless” and warned it was only one of several incursions that could lead to broader conflict.
Moscow publicly denied targeting Polish territory and said the flight range of its drones should not have crossed the border. Russia also proposed diplomatic consultations to address the incident. However, European leaders remain skeptical amid rising anxieties over Russian aggression.
Poland has called on NATO for support and raised alerts throughout its eastern regions, warning residents to stay indoors as military assets protect the skies. The international community closely watches, hoping to avoid an outbreak of wider warfare.
