My Stepson’s Words on Our Door Camera Revealed a Heartbreaking Truth

My stepson, Liam, came back from his mom’s house every Sunday withdrawn, a far cry from the lively ten-year-old I loved. I asked my husband, Chris, to talk to him, but Liam stayed quiet. Then, our door camera’s microphone captured a conversation with his biological mom that left me stunned and aching for him. Liam used to brighten our home, sharing school tales and decorating cupcakes with me. But recently, he’d return from his mom’s, toss off his shoes, and retreat to his room. While making dinner, I voiced my concern to Chris. “Is Liam okay?” I asked, chopping peppers. Chris shrugged, peeling garlic. “He’s probably fine. His mom, Susan, can be strict, maybe pushing him about school.” I frowned. “I do that too, and he’s fine. I don’t want to overstep as his stepmom, but something’s not right.” Chris agreed to check on Liam later.

After dinner, Chris and Liam sat by the patio heater, toasting bread. “How was your weekend?” Chris asked. Liam muttered, “Okay. Mom was just Mom.” Chris probed, “You seem upset. Is it tough there?” Liam sighed. “It’s draining, but I have to go.” Chris suggested fewer visits, but Liam’s face fell, and he darted inside, pausing to hug me tightly. “Night, Laura,” he said, heading to bed. His hug felt heavy with unspoken pain, and I sensed something beyond normal co-parenting issues. Last Sunday, Chris was running errands, and I waited for Liam’s return. At 5 p.m., Susan’s car arrived. Our door camera, set up after neighborhood thefts, turned the TV to the porch feed. Liam and Susan stood there.

Susan handed Liam a tin of muffins. “See you next week,” she said. “You know what to do.” Liam’s head bowed. “Mom, I don’t want to,” he said. My heart pounded as I listened. “Tell them the truth,” Liam begged. “I hate lying to Dad. They know something’s up. If Dad finds out you’re making me steal, he’ll be so angry.” I gasped. Stealing? Liam added, “Laura’s noticing her stuff’s gone—her lotions, her tampons. I can’t keep doing this.” I’d wondered about my missing items. Susan snapped, “They have money. Next time, take Laura’s bracelet. I need to sell it for my bills.” She added, “Check Dad’s wallet for cash. It’s for emergencies, and I’m one.” I was shocked—Susan was coercing Liam to steal.

aMy heart ached for Liam, burdened by this secret. I opened the door. “Susan,” I said sharply. Liam hugged me, trembling. “I heard everything,” I said. “Liam, go inside.” Susan bristled, but when I threatened to call Chris, she confessed her financial struggles and inability to care for Liam. “I’ll cover your debts,” I said. “But Liam stays here until you’re stable, and you stop asking him to steal, or I’ll report you.” Susan nodded, subdued. “Thank you,” she said, agreeing to send her costs. As she left, Liam hugged me, sobbing. “I’m sorry, I didn’t want to steal!” he cried. “It’s okay,” I said. “We’ll help your mom and make things right.” Holding him, I pondered how to protect him and whether to tell Chris, but I felt Liam’s relief in my arms.
