Jane Seymour Recalls the Nerve-Wracking Fun of Filming with Owen Wilson

Jane Seymour is looking back on one of her most talked-about film moments with a smile. The actress, who played the captivating and unconventional Kathleen Cleary in the 2005 blockbuster Wedding Crashers, recently detailed the experience of filming the infamous nude scene with co-star Owen Wilson. Her recounting paints a picture of a mutually nervous but professionally joyful set, where character work and spontaneity created comedy gold.

Seymour confessed that the idea of the scene was daunting for both parties. “Owen was actually very nervous about the whole experience, and I was too!” she shared. To overcome this, she leaned heavily on her craft, making a clear distinction between herself and the role. She told Wilson that while Jane Seymour might have qualms, Kathleen Cleary was in charge and had no such issues. This mindset allowed her to approach the scene with the bold, unflinching confidence her character demanded.

The filming process itself became a source of laughter. With director David Dobkin calling out small, specific adjustments to Wilson’s physical performance—like the tension in his hand—the focus was on building a realistic and hilarious awkwardness layer by layer. Seymour remembers the atmosphere as being full of lighthearted moments, with the repeated takes and precise directions often feeling funnier than the scene they were creating.

The most memorable element, however, came from a moment of pure improvisation. Seymour revealed that after they had completed the scene as written, Wilson leaned in with a suggestion for her exit. He proposed she simply call him a “pervert.” She agreed, and that one-word ad-lib became the scene’s iconic closing beat, perfectly punctuating the bizarre interaction and leaving audiences in stitches. It was a testament to their collaborative chemistry.

As fans of the classic comedy continue to hold out hope for a sequel, stories like this remind us why the original connected so deeply. It was the product of talented actors willing to embrace vulnerability and silliness in equal measure, resulting in a film—and a particular scene—that continues to be celebrated and quoted nearly twenty years later.
