I Became a Janitor to Uncover My Husband’s Secret, But the Truth Was Wilder

My husband, Tom, and I used to share cozy nights—our son, Lucas, asleep, us curled up with popcorn and a movie. I’m Lauren, and those evenings are gone. Tom’s been working late every Friday, claiming school tasks, leaving me alone. One night, as Lucas slept, Tom’s phone buzzed downstairs. I crept down, spotting the guest bathroom light. The phone flashed “Megan calling,” showing a woman with a dazzling smile in a school shirt—Megan, Lucas’s new teacher. My chest tightened. Was Tom cheating with her?

I slumped on the stairs, eyeing the phone, but I’m not one to storm in yelling. I needed to know the truth, quietly. Over lunch with my friend, Kate, I shared my worry. “He’s always ‘busy’ Fridays, and I saw Megan’s name on his phone,” I whispered. Kate gasped. “That’s no school meeting. You need to dig.” I laughed shakily. “I can’t even fib to Lucas about monsters!” Kate grinned. “No fibs—just cleaning. My husband’s cleaning service needs a temp at the school. Wear a disguise, snoop around.” I sighed but agreed. “I’ve cleaned our house forever. Why not?”

The next day, I left Tom a note about errands and went to Kate’s. In a red wig and oversized uniform, name tag “Holly,” I looked odd. “I’m a lunch lady now,” I muttered. Kate chuckled. “No one suspects the janitor.” She gave me a walkie-talkie, and I headed to the school. The guard warned about the staff microwave, and I slipped inside, nerves jangling. Kids passed, and I thought they’d know, but they were just talking. I mopped, waiting for Tom. After the final bell, I saw Lucas head to Megan’s room, Tom nearby. I mopped closer, ears sharp.

“Tonight, as usual?” Megan said. My heart dropped—betrayal confirmed. Then Lucas entered. “Forgot my book,” he said, spotting me. My mop wobbled, and my wig fell. “Mom?” he said. Tom gaped. “What’s this?” I forced a grin. “Here for Lucas,” I said, staring at Tom. “Stay where you meant to be.” I took Lucas and left, tears spilling. At home, I let Lucas watch TV and packed Tom’s clothes, grumbling, “Best Husband shirt? Nope.” Outside, a girl with braids stood. “I’m with my dad,” she said. Tom appeared. “This is Ava, my daughter,” he said. “Megan’s daughter, from before you.”

I blinked. “No affair?” Tom shook his head. “Megan’s married. She wants Ava to know me.” I was angry but relieved. “You should’ve told me,” I said. “Lucas needs to know his sister.” Tom nodded. “We’re picking her school.” I sighed. “I’ll make snacks. You carry that suitcase back.” The truth wasn’t cheating, but it changed everything. Ava and Lucas are bonding, and though it hurts, I’m glad my janitor stunt uncovered a new family.
