The fire erupted near a site where a smaller fire had been contained a week before, with fireworks reportedly set off on New Year’s Eve contributing to conditions. The ATF has been investigating whether leftover embers from that fire fueled the Palisades Fire.

Officials are expected to hold a press conference to provide more information regarding the cause of the fire and the recent arrest. A related fire in Eaton claimed 19 lives on the same day.

The full scope of the disaster’s human toll is still being studied, with experts suggesting indirect effects may have pushed the death count even higher.
