The belief that the Bible condemns couples with an age difference as sinful is unfounded. Scripture never forbids relationships just because the individuals were born in different years. In fact, the Bible centers on the quality of a relationship—love, faithfulness, and shared devotion take precedence over age.
Scriptural teachings ask us to look deeper than physical differences like age. Instead, the focus is on having a sincere heart and living according to God’s love. The pinnacle of this love is seen in Jesus’ sacrifice, as outlined in 2 Corinthians 5:21. Pope Benedict XVI described this sacrifice as the ultimate act of love—God taking upon Himself human sin so that everyone, even His critics, could experience salvation. Jesus, in Matthew’s Gospel, asks us to love others—even those who treat us badly. This intense kind of love encourages us to have a heartfelt connection with God that leads to genuine transformation.
This approach is very different from the Athenians mentioned in Acts, who were always drawn to new trends without seeking deeper meaning. Today, with social media and constant distractions, people can lose touch with what really matters. God’s call challenges us to set aside such distractions and instead live in true communion with Him, aligning our actions and prayers with His purpose.
Suffering still exists today—in wars, in the neglected, and in those hurt by injustice or environmental harm. All this suffering echoes the pain Christ endured. In such a world, the temptation to make profit an idol is strong, but biblical teaching tells us to use our blessings to help others. Almsgiving is a concrete way to show love and move away from greed. Yet, generosity isn’t enough; we are called to fix unjust systems as well. To this end, young innovators will meet in Assisi to find ways to make society’s economy fairer for everyone. The Church teaches that standing up for justice serves the common good and is itself an act of charity. This Lent, guided by Mary, may we open ourselves to God’s transformative love and allow it to turn us into true witnesses—salt and light to all.
