A Pushy Guest Demanded Special Treatment at My Restaurant—She Didn’t Know I Owned It

Running my restaurant for 15 years, I’ve seen entitled customers, but none like Rachel, who demanded a table by claiming she knew “the owner.” Her face when she realized I was the owner was unforgettable. My grandparents started our eatery with recipes from Greece, and my parents made it a neighborhood staple. I added modern flair and a strong online game, making us a city favorite with packed reservations. I still work the floor—serving, greeting—because owning means doing it all.

One wild Friday before Christmas, every table was booked, the bar buzzing. I was helping my hostess, Ava, when Rachel and her five friends pushed forward. “Table for six,” she said, all confidence. Ava said we were full. Rachel smirked, “I’m friends with the owner; he keeps tables for me.” I asked who she meant, but she dodged, saying he’d be mad if we refused her. I could’ve said I was the owner, but her smugness stopped me. I offered to call if a table opened. She laughed, “You’ll be jobless when I tell him!” Her friend took my photo, mocking my “server gig.”

I chose to have fun. “My error,” I said, seating them in our VIP nook. “First three drinks are free.” Rachel handed over her card, ordering costly cocktails. They devoured high-end dishes—truffle pasta, oysters—unaware of prices, hidden on the VIP menu. They sneered about my “waiter life,” solidifying my plan. By midnight, their bill hit $4,400. Rachel gasped, claiming a mistake. I added a missed caviar order, making it $4,520. She demanded a discount, citing her “owner friend.” I slid over my card: “Nick, Owner.” Her friends froze. “I’ve never met you,” I said. “Pay, or I call the police.” She signed, crying, as her friends dug for cash. “Don’t fake connections with the staff,” I said as they left. They walked out, lesson learned, and I knew they’d carry that night forever.
