A Birthday Reunion

As I set the table for my 47th birthday, a pang of sadness hit me. Two years had passed since my daughter, Karen, last spoke to me, and the silence had become almost unbearable. My partner, Brad, noticed the extra plate I had set out, and his eyes filled with understanding. “This one’s for Karen?” he asked softly. I nodded, my eyes welling up with tears.

The years of silence had taken a toll on me. I had tried reaching out to Karen through letters, voicemails, and emails, but she hadn’t responded. The pain of not knowing why she had cut me off had become a constant ache. Brad’s presence was the only thing that brought me comfort.

That night, after Brad had gone to bed, I rummaged through old photo albums, reminiscing about the good times with Karen. As I flipped through the pages, I stumbled upon a forgotten birthday card in an old drawer. It was addressed to me, and the postmark indicated it had been sent over a year ago. The card read “Happy 46th Birthday, Mom” in Karen’s familiar handwriting. I was shocked and confused – why hadn’t I received it?

I realized that I needed to talk to Nigel, Karen’s father, to understand what had happened. Brad offered to accompany me, and we drove to Nigel’s house. When we arrived, Nigel mentioned that Karen had moved to Canada with her boyfriend over a year ago. I was stunned – why hadn’t he told me? And then Nigel handed me the birthday card, explaining that Karen had given it to him to pass on to me, but he had forgotten.

The card brought tears to my eyes. Karen’s words revealed that she had been torn between her love for me and her loyalty to her father, who had been pressuring her not to talk to me. She apologized for her silence and expressed her love for me. For the first time in years, I felt a glimmer of hope.

With the card clutched tightly in my hand, I decided to take a chance and visit Karen in Canada. As I stood outside her door, my heart racing with anticipation, she opened it and wrapped her arms around me. In that moment, all the pain and silence melted away, and we were whole again. We held each other tightly, and I knew that our bond was stronger than ever.
