Sydney and Eileen Lonergan’s tragic story began on a 1998 dive trip near Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, where they were accidentally abandoned in shark-infested waters. Their disappearance became legendary and inspired the film Open Water.
Experienced scuba divers, the couple spent the afternoon diving at a well-known reef teeming with marine life. Fishermen nearby noted unusual shark presence that day, which earned the nickname “Shark City.”
Due to a miscount involving two divers who jumped back in at the last moment, the crew mistakenly thought the Lonergans were aboard. Two dive bags and missing equipment were ignored, and despite a hotel shuttle driver’s concern, no immediate action was taken.
