Rising THC Levels in Cannabis Pose Growing Mental Health Concerns

Recent scientific findings reveal that cannabis products in Canada are now much stronger than in the past, boosting health risks, especially related to mental illness. The average THC content has increased fivefold since the early 2000s, going from roughly 4% to over 20%.

This increase in potency corresponds with more cases of psychosis linked to cannabis, including hallucinations and delusions. Younger users, men, and those already experiencing mental illness are particularly vulnerable to these effects.

An extensive study involving millions of Ontarians found a heavy connection between cannabis-related health issues and the later development of schizophrenia, with risks rising dramatically for those who experienced cannabis-induced psychotic episodes.

Medical professionals recommend quitting cannabis at the first signs of these symptoms. Treatments often involve antipsychotic drugs and behavioral therapy to help users manage and reduce their symptoms.

This study underscores the need for greater public awareness of the dangers of high-potency cannabis and calls for careful use and monitoring.
