Age Differences in Marriage: What the Bible Really Says

Searching the Bible for rules about age gaps between married couples leads to one main conclusion: there aren’t any clear rules. The Bible usually does not talk about the ages of partners. The example of Abraham and Sarah shows a ten-year difference, which was not unusual.

The story of Ruth and Boaz is another case people discuss. Boaz’s kindness and reference to younger men imply he was older, but the Bible does not specify ages. Some traditional ideas claim big gaps but without scripture support.

Similarly, Joseph and Mary’s age difference is a popular idea, but it comes from later stories, not the Bible. Scripturally, age gaps aren’t presented as harmful or forbidden.

Instead, the Bible emphasizes choosing partners of the opposite sex who share your faith, and marrying for love and commitment. In life, age differences might pose challenges, especially when one person is very young, but the Bible leaves those decisions up to individuals, trusting in wisdom and prayer.
