Laura Dahlmeier, a well-known German biathlon champion, died in an accident while climbing in Pakistan. She was ascending Laila Peak on July 28 when falling rocks struck her. Her partner survived and reported the situation, triggering a rescue operation.
Dahlmeier’s death was confirmed on July 30, but the body remains unrecovered because of poor weather and safety risks. Her family has clearly stated they do not want recovery teams to put themselves in danger, per a statement posted on Dahlmeier’s Instagram.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier praised her achievements and character, recalling giving her the Silver Laurel Leaf after her first Olympic gold in 2018.
Her climbing partner, Marina Eva, made efforts to find and help Dahlmeier but had to withdraw for safety reasons. Rescue helicopters were ready but unable to operate due to weather.
Before Laila Peak, Dahlmeier had summited Great Trango Tower and had been in Pakistan during July. At 31 years old, she had retired from biathlon but stayed connected to mountains as a certified guide and local rescue volunteer.
