Sara Hernández García of Texas is a US citizen living in Mexico after her undocumented parents were deported. Sara was undergoing treatment for a brain tumor in Texas when immigration policies tightened, splitting the family.
Their attorney Danny Woodward explained that the family could once move freely for care, crossing checkpoints when showing medical letters. However, stricter immigration enforcement following Trump’s election changed that.
Stopped at a checkpoint traveling to a hospital in Houston, the family was forced to choose between government custody of their children or deportation. They were deported together, except the eldest child, who stayed in the US.
Homeland Security denies parts of the family’s story, citing privacy. The Garcias are staying with relatives in Mexico, waiting for a humanitarian parole decision. They remain deeply concerned for their children still in the United States.
