From Mother and Daughter to Father and Son: A Brazilian Family’s Transition Story

In Brazil, a parent and child who once identified as mother and daughter have transitioned together, embracing new roles as father and son. Raphael, age 38, and 10-year-old Gustavo, who were both assigned female at birth, now live openly as men.

They share their journey with over 24,000 followers on Instagram and were able to access free transition-related treatments through expansions in São Paulo’s public health care system. Raphael was treated at a municipal hospital, and Gustavo receives specialized care at clinics focusing on youth and gender identity.

Many assume one influenced the other’s gender journey, but Raphael insists Gustavo’s early start at age 4 was independent. For Raphael, seeing his child’s courage gave him the strength to take his own steps toward transition. Gustavo said calling his mother “dad” felt natural and easy.

They have highlighted the importance of using their chosen names and pushed back against those who use their previous names, emphasizing respect for trans people’s identities. Their participation in trans events has introduced them to a welcoming community that makes them feel loved and hopeful.

Raphael described the experience of hearing his new name as deeply emotional and life-affirming. Their story is a powerful example of personal truth, family love, and resilience in the face of societal challenges.
