Milan Airport Tragedy: Man Dies After Being Drawn Into Plane Engine

On July 8, Milan Bergamo Airport was the scene of a tragic accident when Andrea Russo, a 35-year-old man from Lombardy, was fatally injured after being sucked into the engine of a plane ready to take off. Russo was not authorized to be on the runway and was neither a passenger nor an employee.

According to reports, Russo illegally entered the airport by driving the wrong way, abandoned his vehicle, and entered the terminal building. He then accessed a restricted area where aircraft are parked. Despite security efforts, he reached the taxiway where a Volotea Airbus A319 was preparing for takeoff to Asturias, Spain.

The man was immediately killed by the plane’s engine. The airport halted all flights for several hours, causing delays and diversions. SACBO’s president, Giovanni Sanga, offered condolences to the victim’s family and acknowledged the trauma experienced by airport staff and witnesses.

Volotea Airlines confirmed the incident, expressing sorrow and gratitude to their crew and passengers for their support. Investigations are ongoing to understand how Russo accessed the restricted area and the events leading up to the tragedy.
