Trump Targets Brazil with 50% Tariffs Over Bolsonaro Dispute

US President Donald Trump has announced a hefty 50% tariff on all Brazilian imports beginning August 1, citing Brazil’s treatment of former president Jair Bolsonaro as a key reason. This move could disrupt American consumers’ daily habits, especially with Brazil’s large share of coffee and orange juice exports to the US.

Brazil had enjoyed preferential trade status with the US, but Trump shared a letter on Truth Social to Brazil’s president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, outlining the new tariffs. The letter condemned Brazil’s prosecution of Bolsonaro, calling it unjust and accusing the country of attacking free elections and censoring US social media.

Brazil provides roughly one-third of the US’s coffee imports and more than half of its orange juice, so the tariff could raise prices on these staples.

Trump’s letter noted that the US has tried to negotiate better trade relations but found Brazil’s tariff and trade barriers unfair. Lula responded firmly on Twitter, defending Brazil’s sovereignty and judicial independence.

Brazil’s Minister of Institutional Affairs, Gleisi Hoffmann, criticized Trump, saying Brazil no longer bows to US pressure and urged him to focus on domestic issues.

This tariff is part of Trump’s wider plan to impose reciprocal duties on several countries, including a 10% tariff on the UK, with new rates set to begin in August unless agreements are reached.
