Mexican boxer Pedro Antonio “Tony” Rodriguez was found dead in his hotel room just hours after competing in a professional bout in Phoenix, Arizona. The 37-year-old fought Phillip Vella on July 5 at the American Royal Palace but lost by unanimous decision.
Rodriguez had planned to join other boxers for dinner after the fight but never showed up. The next morning, he missed his airport transport, leading hotel staff to check on him and discover he was unresponsive. The cause of death is under investigation, with no confirmed link to the fight.
Rodriguez’s wife, Karla Valenzuela, said her last contact with him was a video call after the fight, where he mentioned going out for dinner and returning before their early morning flight. She suspects a possible injury from the fight but is waiting for official results.
Del Sol Boxing Promotions mourned Rodriguez’s death and asked for respect for his family. Vella expressed his sorrow on social media, appreciating the chance to fight Rodriguez and sending prayers to his loved ones.
