Community Mourns Newlywed Lost to Lightning Strike on Honeymoon

A heartbreaking tragedy struck when 29-year-old Jake Rosencranz died during his honeymoon in Florida. Jake, from Colorado, and his new wife, Leah, were enjoying a day at New Smyrna Beach on June 20, 2025, when a rare lightning strike changed their lives forever. The loss of such a young life has left a community in mourning.

The day started with clear skies, but a storm inland moved toward the coast by midday. Jake was standing in ankle-deep water when one of 170 lightning bolts recorded that day struck him. The CDC reports that lightning strikes are extremely rare, with odds of less than one in a million, yet Jake tragically passed away on June 21 after the incident.

Lifeguards quickly performed CPR and rushed Jake to the hospital, but he could not be revived, according to Tamra Malphurs, Volusia County Beach Safety Director. The sudden loss of a man starting a new chapter with his wife has touched the hearts of many who never met him.

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood shared a heartfelt message online, offering condolences to Leah and praising the lifeguards and medical teams who tried to save Jake. A GoFundMe page for Jake’s family has raised over $23,000, reflecting the love and support pouring in.

Two others were struck by lightning that day at a nearby golf course but did not need hospital care. Jake’s story reminds us how fragile life can be. His memory will live on through Leah and the countless tributes celebrating the love and joy he brought to those around him.
