Five years ago, my world was shattered when my husband Frank passed away during our morning walk. The silence that followed was deafening, and I struggled to cope with the loss. But my life changed when my grandson Jake was born. He brought joy and purpose back into my life, and I was grateful to be a part of his journey.
As a retired kindergarten teacher, I’ve had the privilege of knowing many children, but Jake is one of a kind. His curiosity and enthusiasm are infectious, and I cherish our time together. When Jake joined a Little League team, I was over the moon with excitement. I spent hours preparing for his first game, making a glittery sign and buying a custom T-shirt with his name and number.

However, just before the game, my daughter-in-law Bethany called me and told me I couldn’t attend. She claimed it was a league rule that only parents were allowed, but I later found out that was a lie. Bethany’s parents were there, and they even brought a big Lego set as a gift. I felt hurt and confused, and I couldn’t understand why Bethany would exclude me from such an important event.
When I confronted my son Lewis about it, he explained that Bethany didn’t want me to make a fuss or draw too much attention to Jake. She thought I might embarrass him with my proud displays of grandmotherly love. I was taken aback by this revelation, and I realized that Bethany’s parents had been influencing her decisions.
But life has a way of teaching us valuable lessons. A few weeks later, Jake fell ill, and Bethany and Lewis were busy with work. They asked me to stay with Jake, and I gladly agreed. As I took care of my sick grandson, I realized that being a grandmother isn’t just about attending games or making a big show of ourselves. It’s about being there for our loved ones when they need us most.
As Jake recovered, he gave me a baseball with smudged signatures from his teammates. It was a heartfelt gift, and I treasured it deeply. I placed the ball on my mantel, next to Frank’s photo, as a reminder of the importance of family and love. Despite the challenges and misunderstandings, I know that being a grandmother is a privilege, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be Jake’s safe place, his team, and his number-one fan.
