Setting Boundaries with Family: A Delicate yet Necessary Decision

As a retiree, I thought I had earned the right to enjoy my golden years without too much stress. However, my daughter-in-law’s request to babysit her three kids put me in a difficult position. While I was happy to watch my grandson, I felt that taking care of all three children would be overwhelming.

I explained to my daughter-in-law that I would need to be paid for babysitting her other two kids, as I couldn’t afford to take on the responsibility without compensation. To my surprise, she didn’t respond, and the next day, I found that she had changed the locks on her house, effectively barring me from entering.

When I called her to discuss the situation, she accused me of treating her kids differently and made it clear that I was no longer welcome in her home. I tried to explain that my decision wasn’t motivated by favoritism, but rather by my own limitations as a retiree. Unfortunately, my words fell on deaf ears.

Now, the situation has created tension within the family, and my son is caught in the middle. While I feel hurt and guilty for the stress caused, I also believe that my boundaries should be respected. The question is, how can I address this situation without deepening the rift?
