A 23-year-old British student, Mia O’Brien, has been sentenced to life in prison in Dubai after being convicted of drug offenses. Found with 50 grams of cocaine in an apartment, Mia was convicted in a one-day trial and sentenced to 25 years behind bars and fined.
Her mother said the trial was not fair as it was conducted entirely in Arabic. Mia has been enduring harsh conditions in Al-Awir Prison, which is well-known for brutal treatment including beatings, electrocutions, and rampant sexual violence.
Other prisoners have recounted harrowing experiences such as forced drinking from unclean water sources, torture with cattle prods, and being beaten for sport. Conditions are overcrowded and prisoners face limited access to help or communication.
The British government provides consular support but reminds travelers that the UAE has strict zero-tolerance drug policies with severe penalties including life imprisonment or death.
Mia shares a cell with six others and has described the prison as a nightmare, with fears and inadequate medical treatment. She is preparing to appeal the sentence but her future remains bleak as she faces decades in this infamous facility.
