First 20 Minutes of a Nuclear Attack: The US Regions Most at Risk

A haunting simulation recently detailed what could happen in the first 20 minutes after a nuclear strike on the United States. The threat of World War III and nuclear weapons remains a dark possibility, with missiles today far deadlier than those from past conflicts.

The Infographics Show’s video explains how an enemy would divide targets into two groups: counterforce (military targets that weaken enemy retaliation) and countervalue (key cities and infrastructure that affect long-term recovery).

According to the simulation, attacks would hit five major US areas: the Pacific Coast, Great Plains, South, Midwest, and Northeast. These zones contain numerous missile silos, military bases, economic hubs, and government centers.

The Great Plains’ missile silos, separated by miles, would require precise strikes for neutralization.

Pacific ports and tech companies make the West Coast a vital target.

The Midwest’s large cities and financial centers add to its risk.

Southern states’ oil refineries and military facilities could cripple defense and economy.

The Northeastern region holds government institutions and major naval bases. New York City, too, is a symbolic target that could cripple morale.

This simulation reveals the catastrophic impact nuclear war would have on multiple US regions almost immediately.
