45 Years of Marriage and Misery? The Holiday Divorce Phone Call

As Christmas approached, an elderly man in Minneapolis made an unexpected call to his son in Chicago. The man announced that after 45 years of marriage, he and his wife were divorcing. “Forty-five years of misery is enough,” he said flatly. The son was stunned and asked for clarification.

The man explained that he and his wife couldn’t stand each other anymore and that the son should let their sister know. Then, the call abruptly ended. Worried, the son rang his sister right away.

The sister refused to accept the news quietly. “They are not getting divorced!” she said passionately and called their father to stop the proceedings. “No lawyers, no papers. Your brother and I are coming home for Christmas,” she declared.

The father then turned to his wife and said, “It’s settled. They’re both coming home—and they’re paying for their own tickets.” For this family, Christmas has always been a time for reunion, no matter what.
