In late 2023, Michael Reynolds, age 29, repeatedly sought medical attention for throat pain and swelling that worsened to the point he could not swallow. Doctors diagnosed him with tonsillitis and prescribed antibiotics but failed to recognize the severity of his condition.
Michael’s breathing was compromised by epiglottitis—swelling that blocks the airway—but delayed treatment led to oxygen loss and cardiac arrest. He died after collapsing at home and being taken to hospital.
Michael’s widow Charlotte expressed deep grief and hopes sharing their experience will encourage better recognition of epiglottitis symptoms among medical professionals and the public.
The family’s loss highlights the dangers of misdiagnosis and the importance of urgent care for airway emergencies.
