The Truth About Tesla Battery Life After 300,000 Miles

Tesla owner Jason McKnight recently revealed he has driven his 2022 Model Y more than 300,000 miles and shared the state of his battery health. Posting on the Tesla High Mileage Club Facebook, he tackled a frequent concern: how much do Tesla batteries degrade with miles?

Battery degradation means the electric battery holds less charge over time, just like phone batteries lose strength as they age. Charging the battery fully and using it extensively can increase the rate of this degradation.

Jason’s Tesla battery is the original pack and, after heavy use in three years, has degraded about 21%. Experts say this is actually very good for such mileage.

According to Tesla’s Impact Report, their Model S and Model X cars show around 12% battery loss after 200,000 miles. Vev, an energy sector firm, explains larger batteries tend to degrade slower, making EVs cost-effective over time.

Tesla batteries typically last from 10 to 15 years. Battery replacement is recommended around 70% capacity, so with Jason’s usage, his Tesla might run close to one million miles before needing a new battery—a great value compared to traditional vehicles.

Many online admire Jason’s mileage, with some calling their cars low-mileage in comparison. Driving such distances yearly, Jason demonstrates Tesla’s battery durability for heavy users.
