Barbara Eden: A Hollywood Icon Facing Personal Tragedy

Barbara Eden, who lit up screens as Jeannie in I Dream of Jeannie, turned 92 on August 23. Still admired for her charm and elegance, Eden’s public success hides a private sorrow—the loss of her son Matthew to a heroin overdose in 2001.

Growing up in the difficult times of the Great Depression, Eden rose to fame through sheer talent. Throughout the late 1950s, she appeared in movies like A Private’s Affair and on shows like I Love Lucy. Starring opposite Elvis Presley in Flaming Star helped boost her career, but becoming Jeannie made her a household name.

In 1965, she and actor Michael Ansara welcomed their son, Matthew. Their marriage ended when Matthew was nine, and Eden often reflects on whether their split impacted his life. By 1984, Matthew came home from living with his dad appearing withdrawn and unmotivated. While he said he was in college, he had been hiding drug use since childhood.

Despite years of rehab and support, Matthew’s heroin addiction persisted, causing heartbreaking challenges for the family. Yet, there were hopeful moments—Matthew married, attended UCLA for creative writing, acted in films like To Protect and Serve, and was engaged to a wonderful woman.

Sadly, on June 26, 2001, Matthew died from a heroin overdose at 35. Alongside drugs, police found steroids, highlighting his bodybuilding passion. Eden has spoken candidly about her grief and the tough questions left behind, acknowledging that addiction can touch anyone.

She fondly recalls Matthew as someone who fought many battles but ultimately succumbed to his personal struggles. Matthew was laid to rest beside his father, who passed away in 2013. Eden continued acting and married Jon Eicholtz in 1991. Her most recent film role was Mrs. Claus in 2019’s My Adventures with Santa. At 92, she remains a beacon of grace.

Her story blends joy and pain and offers hope. Eden encourages those struggling with substance abuse to reach out for help because one call can truly change a life.
