Man Risked it All to Rescue Chimp From Drowning in Detroit Zoo Tragedy

Jo-Jo, a chimpanzee at the Detroit Zoo, faced a life-threatening struggle in 1990 after jumping into a water moat to escape a more dominant chimp. The stunned spectators, including truck driver Rick Swope visiting with family, watched helplessly as Jo-Jo fought to stay afloat.

Without hesitation, Rick jumped into the dangerous waters despite the risk—adult chimps are far stronger and unpredictable. Struggling to grasp the heavy, panicked animal beneath the murky surface, Rick courageously retrieved Jo-Jo and pulled him to safety.

Rick later said he felt a silent connection in Jo-Jo’s eyes during those moments. His bravery not only saved a life but also left a lasting legacy of compassion. This event reminds us of how acts of kindness can take place anywhere and how sometimes a visitor can become an unlikely hero in life-or-death situations.
