Unexpected Treasure: Couple Finds Valuable Ambergris on UK Beach

On a casual walk along Middleton Sands beach, Gary and Angela Williams encountered a surprising find — a heavy, odd lump emitting a foul odor that led them to discover what might be valuable ambergris. This natural substance, known as “whale vomit,” is prized in the perfume industry and can fetch tens of thousands of pounds.

Weighing 1.57 kilograms, the lump is roughly the size of a small rugby ball and reminds the couple of a similar find from 2013 nearby valued at £120,000. They have begun contacting potential buyers, hopeful for a significant return.

Ambergris forms inside sperm whales’ digestive systems and is expelled into the ocean, where it ages and hardens over many years. While valuable, it emits a strong, unpleasant smell and has a puzzling wax-like texture, which the couple noted during their discovery.

Gary and Angela, both from Lancashire, are excited by the possibilities this rare find opens up, particularly in helping them fulfill their dream of purchasing a static caravan. They’ve reached out to experts internationally to ensure the lump’s authenticity and value.

This discovery shows how adventure and curiosity on a simple beach walk can reveal astonishing natural treasures.
