The Truth Behind Those Stubborn Orange Stains on Towels

One day I noticed a strange bright orange spot on my gray hand towel. It looked almost like a neon mark and didn’t come off after washing. Soon, I spotted more orange stains on other towels. These marks were impossible to remove, and I couldn’t figure out why.

If you’re seeing similar orange stains, benzoyl peroxide—the active ingredient in many acne products—is often to blame. It’s a bleaching agent that removes dye from fabric fibers, leaving orange or yellow patches behind. This damage is permanent; washing won’t fix it. My skin contact with acne cream was enough to cause these stains over time.

Rust in water is another common cause, especially if you have a well or high iron content in tap water. Iron precipitates onto fabric during washing and causes small rusty speckles. I learned this after staying at a friend’s house where my white towel got covered in tiny orange freckles after washing. The solution is a laundry booster that binds the iron before it stains your clothes.

Hair products and self-tanners can also cause orange stains on towels. I used a tinted shampoo that left faint marks on my hair towels without realizing until later. Plus, cleaning chemicals like bleach or hydrogen peroxide can bleach towels if they come into contact after wiping surfaces.

Once I knew the causes, I took steps like switching to plain white cloths for skincare routines with benzoyl peroxide, allowing products to fully dry before touching towels, and segregating hair towels. I also started adding rust-removal additives to laundry in high-iron water areas. Unfortunately, bleach damage is permanent, so some towels become cleaning rags or get dyed darker.

Recognizing the difference between chemical bleach spots and mineral rust spots helps prevent frustration. Chemical bleach stains are large and in contact areas, while mineral rust spots are tiny and scattered randomly. If your towels have orange blotches, look at your skincare, water quality, hair products, and cleaning supplies. Being mindful can keep your towels clean and bright.
