Lawsuit Filed After New York Officials Euthanize Famous Squirrel Peanut

In October 2024, Mark Longo and Daniela Bittner lost their Instagram-famous squirrel, Peanut, and a raccoon called Fred, after New York environmental officials raided their home. This seizure led to the animals’ euthanasia over rabies testing concerns when Peanut bit an agent despite thick gloves. The rabies tests later came back negative, but the animals were not returned, and the state did not apologize.

Now, the owners are suing for $10 million, arguing that the DEC’s actions were unwarranted and excessive. They describe the euthanasia as an “execution” and claim the raid was an overreach that caused them emotional harm and financial setbacks. The lawsuit accuses the state, the DEC, and health departments of violating their rights and mistreating Peanut and Fred.

Peanut was a global social media star known for his quirky videos and educational appearances. The case has attracted intense public attention and sparked discussions over pet regulations and government conduct. Longo and Bittner hope the lawsuit will bring justice and prevent future cases like theirs.
