On the Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean’s flagship vessel, a daring waterslide ride took a dangerous turn. As a passenger descended the “Frightening Bolt,” an acrylic panel shattered, opening a hole in the side of the slide. Water poured out, and the passenger suffered injuries from contact with the jagged edges.
Fellow travelers heard alarmed shouts and attempted to alert crew members to halt the ride. The man was carefully treated onboard and is reported to be stable. The slide, the tallest of its kind at sea, was immediately shut down for safety reasons until repairs and inspections can be completed.
Royal Caribbean assured guests that the rest of the facilities were operating normally and that safety remains their highest concern. Investigations continue to determine exactly how the panel failed.
Passenger reactions ranged from shock to relief; many said the incident made them reconsider trying extreme attractions on cruises. Despite the scare, thousands continue to enjoy water parks on cruise ships safely, underscoring the rarity of such accidents.
