Chad Dunbar was a passionate endurance athlete who had never smoked a day in his life. Known for riding over 3,000 rugged miles each season, he was at the height of fitness when unusual leg pain surfaced in 2023. This unexpected symptom, unrelated to his lungs, was an early sign of a rapid and severe lung cancer caused by a rare RET gene mutation.
By the time lung cancer was diagnosed, it had already spread widely. Despite undergoing targeted therapy combined with chemotherapy that initially reduced tumor size and eased his condition, Chad’s fight grew harder due to new mutations, leaving doctors pessimistic about his chances.
In March 2024, he was informed of a 5% chance of surviving beyond five years but chose to live fully with his wife and two sons. Chad’s death in mid-2025 shocked his community and family, prompting increased awareness of lung cancer risks among healthy non-smokers, and emphasizing the importance of paying attention to all health changes.
