Ridges or ripples on fingernails often surprise people, but these changes can provide valuable insights into your health. Vertical ridges, which run up and down the nail, usually develop naturally with age or due to mild vitamin shortages like B12, iron, and magnesium. They are often harmless but worth tracking if they change rapidly.
Horizontal ridges, known as Beau’s lines, are more concerning and can indicate a past serious illness or health event that slowed nail growth. These lines can appear with conditions such as heart attacks, diabetes, pneumonia, or infections affecting the whole body.
Another type of change, white horizontal lines called Muehrcke’s lines, typically point to liver or kidney problems and low blood proteins. If you notice these lines on multiple nails, a medical check-up is advisable.
Most cases of ridged nails are benign and improve with a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals. Nonetheless, sudden or worsening nail changes, or accompanying health symptoms, should prompt consultation with a healthcare provider.
