How a Young Woman’s Cancer Went Unnoticed for Too Long

Rylie Toomey, a 27-year-old from Pennsylvania, was fit and healthy, preparing for her wedding and running a half marathon. When she began experiencing stomach pain, she went to doctors but was told it was just constipation.

As weeks passed, the pain intensified, and she was rushed to the emergency room with agonizing symptoms like stabbing pain and severe bloating. Tests revealed stage 4 colon cancer, a diagnosis she wasn’t prepared for.

Rylie explained how she believed colon cancer happened to older or less healthy people, making her diagnosis all the more surprising. Medical professionals note that genetics and lifestyle habits influence cancer risk, but young, healthy people can be affected.

She suspects her age made doctors less willing to investigate thoroughly early on. Her advice: trust your body and push for medical tests if something feels wrong. She hopes her story encourages others to insist on proper care.
