Selfie Catches Innocent Man’s Alibi, Saving Him from 99 Years in Prison

Christopher “CJ” Precopia’s life took a terrifying turn when he was falsely accused of a violent assault by his former high school girlfriend. Facing nearly a century in prison, his fate changed thanks to a selfie taken by his mother that proved where he really was on the night of the crime.

On a normal September day in 2017, CJ was arrested at work without warning. Confused and uncertain what had happened, he soon heard accusations from Faith Cox, a former girlfriend, who claimed he broke into her home and attacked her with a box cutter.

Cox alleged CJ caused cuts on her chest and face and inflicted harm using the tool. Police found injuries that supported her story, but no evidence linked CJ to the crime scene. Still, he was charged with serious felonies and faced harsh prison time.

Everything shifted when CJ’s mother posted a photo from that evening showing CJ hundreds of miles away enjoying time with friends. This selfie, timestamped shortly before the claimed attack, gave CJ an airtight alibi.

Nine months after his arrest, prosecutors dropped the charges. Later, CJ’s accuser was charged with filing a false police report. CJ, now serving in the Navy, hopes the case highlights how digital platforms can play a key role in justice and warns against false accusations’ devastating impact.
