Qibao was only three years old when he was teased for having large growths on his head. Born with congenital naevus, a rare skin disorder causing dark moles to cover his scalp, the boy was sadly called “Mickey Mouse” by others.
Medical experts in Shanghai told his parents that the moles could be surgically removed, but first, skin expanders had to be attached to stretch his scalp. Although it was difficult to see, Qibao’s family stayed hopeful throughout the treatment.
His mother said they cried but never gave up. After five months of hard work and surgery, the moles were removed, and videos show the cheerful boy recovering happily in the hospital nursery.

The story spread widely on Chinese social media, inspiring many with Qibao’s bravery and the love shown by his family. Some viewers connected with his experience of being bullied for appearance.
Congenital naevus affects about one in a hundred babies, mostly mildly, but serious cases need surgery or laser treatments. Qibao’s recovery is a powerful example of medical care and family strength changing lives.
