Dauphin County Confirms 9-Year-Old’s Drowning at Hersheypark Was Accidental

The cause of death for Sophia Subedi, age 9, who tragically drowned last week at Pennsylvania’s Hersheypark, has been officially confirmed by the Dauphin County Coroner’s Office. Sophia was overcome in The Shore wave pool on July 24.

The coroner made it clear that there were no medical factors involved, and ruled it an accidental drowning in freshwater. At the time, Hersheypark had about 10 lifeguards dedicated to the wave pool, all trained in water rescue and emergency care.

Emergency teams worked swiftly, but unfortunately, Sophia could not be revived. She was brought to Milton S. Hershey Medical Center where she later passed away.

John Lawn, CEO of the park’s parent company, shared his sympathies and praised the immediate actions taken by lifeguards. He promised a thorough look into the incident and highlighted the importance of guest safety moving forward.

A fundraising campaign to help Sophia’s family has gathered wide support, reflecting the deep impact of the loss on her new hometown community in Harrisburg.

Officials continue to investigate the heartbreaking event.
