Tyler Perry Explains His Firm Approach to Family Money and Why He Fired His Aunt

Tyler Perry has explained the reasons behind firing his aunt and cutting off financial help to some family members. The actor and producer, who’s seen growing success from Netflix projects like She The People, revealed his family values in a recent chat on Kirk Franklin’s YouTube series, Den of Kings.

Perry recalled how his aunt called him often for money, so he decided to offer her a job so she could stand on her own Two feet. Unfortunately, she often failed to show up, and Perry had to let her go. He said, “You can’t expect money without working for it.”

After his mother died in 2009, Perry told his family via letters they had 60 days to find jobs if they wanted to continue receiving support. The jobs might have been low-paying, but Perry believes it gave them dignity and a sense of pride.

He applies these same rules in his personal life, teaching his 10-year-old son that things must be earned through effort. Perry’s clear stance was tested when a family member got upset after he refused a $1 million request. “That’s not spare change!” he commented.

Tyler Perry’s story highlights the importance he places on responsibility and work ethic, even when supporting loved ones.
