Important Advice on Correct Urination From Pelvic Floor Specialist

Urination is something most people take for granted, but Dr. Sara Reardon highlights some important habits that can protect your urinary health. Speaking on a podcast with actress Allison Williams, she explained how straining while peeing can lead to bladder problems and infections.

Instead of pushing, Dr. Reardon recommends sitting comfortably and relaxing so your bladder empties naturally when you feel the need. Overstraining can cause urinary tract infections (UTIs), which involve pain, burning sensations, and frequent urges to urinate. These infections, if untreated, may spread and cause more serious complications.

Dr. Reardon also warns against urinating “just to be safe” or out of anxiety whenever you near a bathroom. This behavior causes your bladder to shrink and increases frequency of urination unnecessarily.

According to the National Association for Continence, sitting with knees higher than hips and hands resting on your knees can help relax your pelvic floor muscles during urination. Additionally, waiting a minute after finishing and trying again can encourage complete bladder emptying.
